to the G8 leaders
Subject
Dear G8 leaders, In recent years we have witnessed some improvements in child health. In 2000, 11.1 million children under-five died. In 2007, this number was reduced to 9.2 million. Most of these deaths are from preventable causes. All are unacceptable. I know that our country is facing a serious economic crisis and that it is the responsibility of governments to look after those most hurt by the change in the economy. Fulfilling all G8 aid promises would only cost 2% of the size of current domestic stimulus packages but the difference it would make could save millions. As a World Vision supporter I am calling on you to work with other G8 government leaders to take action on Child Health by: • Increase aid for primary health care by $15 billion a year by 2010to ensuring access to such care for all women and children; • Increase aid to the Global Fund and other mechanisms to achieve universal access to HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support for adults and children by 2010 • Meet existing G8 government aid promise of $130 billion by 2010 and develop an international strategy to ensure that aid is well managed to deliver quality results If we don’t invest now, millions of children and families may not have a future.
